Syria; ISIS; Kurds; Turkey – what could possibly go…right…?
It’s a mess in the Middle East; our Congress avoids being put in a place to get blamed, instead sluffing their responsibilities off on Pres Trump…who actually makes a decision.
Cue outrage from the avoidance group in Congress.
Andy McCarthy does a masterful job summing up the situation: Turkey’s in NATO, ISIS (or an inevitable facsimile thereof) promises to be a continual problem, fighting along with Kurds against ISIS makes us a Syrian ally, Kurds are separatists…not a country.
This is what the President faces as an inherited problem from past administrations, who took up the problem when Congress failed to act on their Constitutional responsibility.
Staying or ramping up helps a Syrian regime we oppose, violates accords with a NATO ally, and allies America with a (U.S.) designated terrorist group – the Kurds.
According to Andrew McCarthy “The Kurds have been our allies against ISIS, but it is not for us that they have fought. They fight ISIS for themselves, with our help. They are seeking an autonomous zone and, ultimately, statehood…the Kurds we have backed, led by the YPG (People’s Protection Units), are the Syrian branch of the PKK (the Kurdistan Worker’s Party) in Turkey. The PKK is a militant separatist organization with Marxist-Leninist roots. Although…informed observers…contend that the PKK has “evolved,” it remains a formally designated foreign terrorist organization under U.S. law. While our government materially supports the PKK’s confederates, ordinary Americans have been prosecuted for materially supporting the PKK.” (emphasis added)
Political cowards in Congress chose ‘duck-&-cover’ long ago. There is NO right way to solve the problem peacefully; these foreign groups don’t know the meaning of the word.
Congress avoids criticism; the chattering class all wag fingers at the President…
…the only one who had the guts to make a choice.
Let’s leave Jesus out of this – what would YOU do?
