CDC reports total gun-related deaths in 2010 (latest year available) as 31672.
Gun-related homicides (same year) were 11,078. Suicides 19,392.
So, if you want to reduce gun-related deaths by 61%, make suicide illegal.
Oh…wait…

When did NBC start speaking for the NRA, and BlueCollarPerspective?
Last Sunday, a ‘Meet the Press’ journalist managed to make the gun advocates’ case for them, inadvertent though it may have been. He also made the case for our earlier BlueCollar blogs on the Sandy Hook killings, and assault weapon silliness.
While trying to make the point that gun laws should be expanded to make high-capacity rifle magazines illegal, in high drama he waved just such an item under the nose of an NRA CEO. But in D.C., where that show was being taped, it IS illegal to possess such an item…and David Gregory could now be charged for having it on the show!
His unwitting ‘felony’ may be the gun advocates’ dream argument. Piling laws on top of laws with little effect isn’t the answer; it only adds to the confusion (ask NBC’s Gregory, if he’s convicted in the future for his ‘dramatic effect’). And let’s go one step further – is it necessary to convict someone of a crime, when the magazine was in his possession… but the rifle needed to complete the combo was not? And what about intent?
If Gregory is charged, BlueCollar is curious to see if their defense uses the argument posed in our Dec 18 blog, “What ISN’T an assault weapon..?” We posed the question based on one very simple fact – without the presence of intent or action to do harm, a firearm (or accessory item such as a high-capacity magazine), is an inanimate object.
Action defines the object…it takes an assailant to make an ‘assault weapon’.
A newspaper in White Plains New York published the names and addresses of licensed hand-gun owners in their area – complete with Google Maps for each address.
While not sure if it was meant as an intimidation tactic against gun owners, you can be sure of one thing…for the price of a newspaper, future criminals in those areas now know which houses to avoid, and which ones can’t be protected by their owners.
We wonder if that newspaper understands every criminal act in those areas – from this point on – now can be attributed to them, by any enterprising victim bent on litigation?
Gannett Company, owner of the newspaper, better be ‘lawyering up’…
When arguing – sorry, exchanging ideas – with Liberals (or Democrats, if you will), it’s always a good idea to make the exchange short, fact-based, and effective.
We’ve added a Ripostes for Liberals page, which will be updated continually to give you the most decisive, thought provoking responses to Liberal thinking. Happy Hunting!

For those who retort that the 40 House bills the Dem-controlled Senate have buried probably don’t solve our fiscal problems…
When was the last time a political party avoided proving another party’s legislation was bad policy? Especially when 40 examples might be available?
But what do you do when it’s good policy, but call it bad policy and refuse to discuss it?
That’s why the word “buried” in the first sentence is in bold type.
For those who would like detail proving Democrat culpability…
Mark C emails, suggesting links to relevant data would help flesh out information for those inclined to delve further into details…BCP will add that info when appropriate.
This link to the House Representatives ‘job tracker’ lists 40 pro-growth bills deliberately being stalled by Democrats in the Senate, so the crisis can be blamed on GOP…
Only in the Land of the Blind could Harry Reid sell his snake-oil.
Today, he stood on the Democrat-controlled Senate floor – sadly, now a place where House legislation comes to die – and blasted House Republicans for taking a Christmas recess rather than staying in Washington and working a deal to avert the ‘fiscal cliff’.
Claiming the Senate was working, Reid said House GOP members should be there now to make a deal, so “middle class Americans and small businesses don’t get hurt”.
Really, Harry? So why are forty bills passed by the 2012 Republican-controlled House, all written to help middle-class earners and small businesses, presently hidden away by Democrat Senate tyranny? Harry Reid refuses to let them be considered.
Repeat – Reid and Senate Democrats REFUSE to consider 40 pro-growth House bills, including a tax rate extension bill, that would help America’s economy get back on its feet, and help the all-but-forgotten unemployed get urgently needed jobs.
(Why, you might ask? Because with the media’s help Dems want to make it look like all the economic troubles we’re going through are caused by… obstructive Republicans.)
Only in a Land of the Blind could this pathetic excuse for a Senator get away with a claim that the Senate’s working…unless he meant working to deceive Americans!
And a deceitful mainstream media has created this Land of the Blind, by bending their version of reality around the rocky path of hard truth, to suit Harry Reid’s intentions.
So the Blind – receiving this ‘news’ – feel the way must be smooth and right…
…’cuz with the media’s help, that’s the way the 1-eyed King sees it.
Say it ain’t so, Mr. Obama…? Blatant dishonesty…at a funeral… to bash Republicans?
It’s no secret BlueCollar is not a fan of Barack Obama and his Big Government ideas, but we are in awe of America, and respectful of the elected office of President. So its a sorrowful thing when that office is dishonored and disrespected by its occupant.
Several blogs ago, BCP expressed dismay that a United States President would use that office, during a funeral, to maliciously attack an opposition political party.
Now comes a story that Mr. Obama wasn’t just being mean-spirited when he used that solemn occasion to bash Republicans, but had to make up the story to get his digs in.
Obama stated point-blank that his vivid memories of Hawaiian Senator Inouye were prompted by invoking the spectre of Watergate hearings, viewed as a child on a series of motel tv’s during family vacation travels on the mainland. But a Breitbart.com article points out that the Watergate hearings were in 1973, and it’s already been proven that the family vacation Mr. Obama referred to was a year earlier, in 1972.
So an inconsiderate act by a U.S. President – at a Senator’s funeral – not only disrespected and dishonored the recently deceased, but evidently required a completely fabricated untruth as its foundational structure…
Watergate was a black mark against Republicans, and Senator Inouye was a key player in the hearings. Obama could have stirred up that muck at any number of press conferences or Rose Garden mud-slinging events, but…
…during the funeral memorial…? …using debunked untruths to do it…?
Democrats must be so proud.
BlueCollarPerspective wishes all a Merry Christmas, and hopes the day will bring forth a new commitment to honor, respect, and consideration for all.
A tall order, but one can always hope.
If the co-owner of your company recommends you for a raise, but his partner refuses to act on it, whose fault is it when you don’t get the raise?
Open message to E.J. Dionne, Jr. – it’s the partner causing the problem.
For reasons unknown, Mr. Dionne’s allowed to write Washington Post opinion articles. We say ‘reasons unknown’, because usually to write for large news publications one would think fact, integrity, and logic should prevail…but in his case…?
Harsh words, maybe, but how else do you describe a ‘learned’ writer who ignores ‘fact, integrity, and logic’? His latest article about the fiscal cliff is a case in point.
Dionne cites a ‘crisis in our political system’, leading us to a ‘constitutional crackup‘ which will see our ‘country fall into chaos‘…because dastardly House Republicans refuse to ‘avert a fiscal nightmare‘ by doing their job and accepting political realities. But when something that nightmarish – by his own standards – is seen heading toward us, shouldn’t relevant information be on the table?
Uuhhh, Mr. Dionne, H.R. 8, a House Republican bill extending the current tax rate (and, OMG, averting a ‘fiscal nightmare’) has been hidden since Senate Democrats refuse to allow discussion, procedures to amend, or otherwise vote on it… one way or the other.
Oh…did we mention HR8 has been jailed in the Democrat Senate dungeon since August 1st? So, when you wail for Congress “to be allowed to work its will”, it would seem Democrats have…by imprisoning legislation for months, rather than crafting it!
Mr. Dionne, the next time you mention politicians “who would rather see the country fall into chaos than vote for anything that might offend their ideological sensibilities…”
…Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid better be the target of your wrath.
Otherwise, in our opinion that village got lucky, pawning you off on the Post.
