When personal attacks and physical violence became the Left-wing political norm, there was no way for many to deal with it, other than to conceal their beliefs for protection.

A perfect argument against those who choose bomb-throwing, rather than participate in a civil exchange of ideas, to make their point – how is this not understood by the Left?
